North rather than South

What? You’re going north? This is February! That’s the wrong direction!

This is what we heard over and over when friends found out we were going to Nisswa, MN (about 140 miles north of the Twin Cities) for 10 days. But our nephew and his wife were going to Florida and asked if we would house and dog-sit.

A chance to stay in a lovely home in the woods during winter appealed to me and my sister Sally. The added joy of caring for a mini Aussie-doodle (which neither of us had ever seen) sounded good for everyone’s souls. The decision was easy: “Yes! We’ll do it.”

Of course, on the trip up sleety snow began to fall. Driving carefully, Sally brought us through a potential wreck by doing a “double whirly-bird.” What’s that you say?

Car hitting black ice, turning almost fully to the left then turning almost fully to the right and, at last, straightening out. Snow flying over the car during the whole event. After pulling over, Sally let out a loud scream of gratitude for avoiding a near death experience and resumed driving calm as a cucumber! Having lived in Florida for 46 years, I was yelling “Step on the brakes”! Sally replied, “No, that’s not the right thing to do.” I was a bit of a wreck, having never been in a situation like this. Yikes!

Arriving in one piece we unpacked and settled in.

Little Vino did a good job of training us—when to go out, get a treat, go to bed, get up, cuddle, spot deer in the yard! On our last day, while we were changing the bed, Vino got under the fitted sheet and had lots of fun scooting around. It was enjoyed by the three of us.

When not tending to Vino, we rested, watched TV, played Catch Phrase, Ellen’s game on Sally’s new Ipad, did a little knitting—more time was spent untangling the yarn, which had become a “toy” to Vino: “catch me if you can.”

One day the snow was falling ever so gently and we wanted to walk in it. It was like being in a wonderland. What beautiful gifts we receive from our earth!

Totally relaxed, we returned home wanting Nisswa to go on and on.

Unfortunately... it was “cold” in Florida. Our nephew and wife never put on bathing suits. Wore sweaters!

Just saying.

Enjoyed your narrative, your fun in the snow and glad there was a happy ending to your whirly swirly scary twirl!
