A child was standing on the shore picking up starfish and throwing them back into the ocean. A man observed her and commented: “There must be thousands of starfish on the beach. Does it really make any difference if you throw one back into the ocean?” As the little girl threw yet another back, she said, “It does to that starfish!”
When we think of rising ocean levels, shortage of potable water, air too polluted to breathe and children starving, we wonder what we can do that would make a difference. We sometimes feel like Thumbelina, trying to drain the sea with a thimble. The residents of Becketwood are just a sliver of a sliver of the world’s population. What difference can we make?
Like the little girl, we’re going to try. Chapel and Environment Committees are teaming up to offer a “2017 Passport to Climate Justice.” This little eight-page document will be available at the April 12 candidates forum and will offer 49 ways that we can make a difference. Passports can be stamped each Friday at Cookie Cart to show activity. If you’ve felt that “no one is doing anything”—now you can be one somebody that is!
The Passport suggests ways to make a difference in your unit, your life, influencing friends, policy makers and organizations. Go to sleep each night knowing that you tried.
