I love flowers—all kinds and every color. With a degree in Horticulture, I immersed myself in learning about flowers while in college. I completed an internship at Bachman’s Floral on Lyndale, working with expert growers in the greenhouses and seeing so many things come to life—red poinsettias, cheerful pansies, delicate orchids, sturdy geraniums, multicolored impatiens, leafy green ferns, graceful tulips and fuzzy-leafed African violets. I couldn’t get enough!
Flowers are one of the many reasons I am grateful to work at Becketwood. You see, we have several secret weapons here. One of them is our Member Barbara White. Barbara has taken it upon herself to spin beautiful creations into floral art and display them here along the walkways and public spaces. Gorgeous arrangements adorn the solarium, rich with roses and lilies. Brightly candy-colored gerbera daisies greet us as we go to get the mail. Tiny little cups hold a bud or two when we sit and visit with friends in the coffee shop after yoga. While signing up for lunch or dinner, there is a perfectly crafted arrangement, softly greeting us, adding color, life and beauty to our days. She also finds vases and containers of all kinds, whimsical and elegant, to enhance the arrangements.
In addition, I love walking into the kitchen on Friday mornings to get my coffee. There, quietly and without fanfare, the women of the Flower Committee give generously of their time and creative energies to elevate the community environment with flowers. Snipping, trimming, carefully arranging buds, blossoms and greens to provide a little hope to get us through these long Winter days. The Wellington Room is ever so welcoming with their special arrangements on the tables. Oh, the gift of flowers! “The Earth laughs in flowers!” Ralph Waldo Emerson
