Patience does not come easy
But waddles slowly, dragging its lizard tail.
It dawdles through random chops of now,
Squeezes between the blank spots of the blizzard,
Sneaks through the cracks in the floor,
Drips all night as it creeps up to the dawn.
Or just trickles in under life’s closed door.
Patience is the soft suede pouch dangling just out of reach,
The slowly rising beer under the foam,
The pounding chest after the threat is gone.
Not
The leak of love from the marriage,
Silently seeping out
Until none is left
And one’s all alone.
Patience waits blindly for the miracle to be revealed,
For the unseen solution to pop up like the weasel,
For the end to materialize from the mist,
For the goal,
To finally,
Bubble up through the taffy.
The universe unfolds on its own terms,
By its own unworldly schedule.
Impatience seeks to suck up our serenity,
As we wait and learn of patience.
I like this, George! Inspires many mental pictures!
Love your imagery.
Thank you, George, for your poem. Metaphors are a delightful surprise: suede pouch, beer, taffy. I love the transition to “patience waits” is just in time … my impatience-tension builds to get there! And your blue lizard the perfect example.
